Hearing Conservation Courses

The basic objective of this course is to provide training which results in competence as an Occupational Hearing Conservationist (OHC). The OHC develops skills in various required elements of a hearing conservation program so that they can function successfully as a member of a hearing conservation team.

The course provides practical knowledge which facilitates program implementation. Manual and microprocessor audiometers are provided for participants' use during the course practicum. A written examination is required. Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate of course completion.

The course is approved for 20 hours of Continuing Education by the California Bureau of Registered Nurses (BRN #00049). This certification is valid for 5 years.

Course Topics:

  • Course orientation
  • Understand the stimulus-response relationship as it applies to coaching during spirometric testing
  • The typical audiometer; audiometer performance checks; methods of calibration; audiometric techniques
  • Supervised audiometric testing
  • Understand and apply spirometer performance specifications when selecting a spirometer
  • Calibrate a spirometer
  • Use appropriate cleaning and sterilization techniques to prevent cross-contamination
  • Judge usefulness of using a respiratory symptom questionnaire
