Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Courses
MEDI Sponsored Certification Training for Breath Alcohol Technicians
a course of instruction in breath alcohol
technician (BAT) training for those interested
in becoming certified as a Breath Alcohol
Technician or a BAT Train-the-Trainer
Certification. Training and certification are
specific to the following CMI Intoxilyzer breath
alcohol testing instrument models: Intoxilyzer
200 and 200D, and Intoxilyzer 400 and 400PA. The
course offered follows guidelines established by
the U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of
Drug Policy and Compliance in their publication,
BREATH ALCOHOL TECHNICIAN TRAINING: DOT MODEL
COURSE. The purpose of this training is to
ensure that persons conducting breath alcohol
testing of regulated workers perform services in
a consistent and uniform manner. It is apparent
that consistency and uniformity are essential
during legal proceedings and add confidence in
the testing process to persons subject to
testing. This course combines both procedural
training and device proficiency training. A
Certificate of Course Completion documents
procedural training and tester proficiency on a
specified breath alcohol test instrument.
training options are available:

Additional trainees may be accommodated up to 12 for an additional fee of $325.00 for each additional trainee. Travel time outside the immediate Northern California (SF Bay) area is billed at $50.00 per hour and per diem and travel expenses apply. Option 2: You enroll your employees requiring training at one of the training programs offered by MEDI and scheduled periodically throughout the year. These courses are offered with sufficient advance notice to allow appropriate staffing arrangements. The current fee for this course is $325.00 per trainee. This option offers less flexibility because the course date is prearranged.
must be prepared to complete certification
training during a single day and satisfactory
demonstration of competence includes a passing
score (70% or better) on a required final
examination. The course begins at 8:00 am and
ends approximately at 5:00 pm. These times are
suggested as reasonable approximations but may
vary somewhat depending on specific requirements
of individual participants. The training
day is concluded when all trainees have
satisfactorily completed procedural training,
instrument training and the course written
examination. Please note that the training day may
go beyond 5:00 pm and trainees must be prepared
for this possibility.
The Train-the-Trainer course qualifies the participant to train BAT Technicians to support their own company program. The Train-the-Trainer course includes the first full day of Technician certification training and a required second half day.
What you bring to the course:
- One of the CMI Intoxilyzer instrument models listed above for each two trainees. Note that it is necessary to have two persons assigned to each instrument during the training sessions. If you have an instrument and only one person to be trained, then perhaps you can enlist participation of someone from another source to join with you.
- At least one standard gas calibration cylinder for each two trainees, tygon tubing to gas cylinder interface (available from MEDI and at the course for $9.50 if you do not have this).
- An appropriate regulator for each instrument used in the training.
- A sufficient number of mouthpieces to accommodate multiple tests for each trainee. (A trainee may reuse a mouthpiece for some of the training exercises).
What is provided at the course and included in the course fee:
- Course presentation materials enclosed in a 3-ring binder
- Required examination
- MEDI Certificate of course completion and certification
- Certification as a BAT from CMI (the additional fee for this certification is included in the course fee)
lunch (vegetarian options available)
The Train-the-Trainer Course
Train-the-Trainer course participants will
complete the certification program described above
along with an additional half-day training on the
following day. Successful completion of this
program qualifies the participant to train BAT
Technicians to support their company program. To
qualify for this training, the participant's
company must be prepared to comply with a training
licensing agreement and a proprietary information
agreement with CMI.
(Full Day) Course Date and location to be determined.
(1 ½ Days) Course Date and location to be determined.
